Elevating work platforms (EWPs) put people and tools safely at height. Choosing one starts with the working height, the horizontal outreach needed to clear obstacles, the floor or ground the machine will travel on and the access route to the work area.
Scissor lifts give a large, stable deck straight up—ideal for ceilings, services and fit-outs on firm, level floors. Knuckle (articulating) booms reach up and over obstacles; stick (telescopic) booms give maximum outreach. Spider lifts fit through doorways and spread load on delicate floors, and truck-mounted EWPs suit roadside and utility work.
Electric machines with non-marking tyres suit indoor work. Diesel rough-terrain machines suit construction sites but have larger turning circles and heavier wheel loads.
Access / EWP classes and sizes
The table below lists the classes of EWPs most commonly available for hire in Australia. Exact specifications vary by make and model—confirm dimensions, weight and capacity with the supplier before booking.

How to choose the right machine
Work out working height and outreach
Working height is roughly platform height plus 2 metres. If you must reach over a roof edge, awning or plant, you need a boom with enough outreach—not just height.
Check the floor and ground
Suspended slabs, mezzanines and pavers have load limits. Ask for the machine's wheel or point load and compare it with engineering advice.
Measure doorways and ramps
Stowed width, height and weight decide whether a machine can get in. Lifts, ramps and door openings are common blockers indoors.
Plan rescue and exclusion zones
Have a rescue plan for a stranded or injured operator and set up exclusion zones below the platform, particularly near pedestrians.
Licences, tickets and compliance
- Boom-type EWPs with a boom length of 11 metres or more require a WP High Risk Work Licence.
- Scissor lifts, vertical lifts and booms under 11 metres do not need an HRWL, but operators must be trained and familiar with the model; an EWPA Yellow Card is widely requested on commercial sites.
- Harnesses and lanyards attached to the anchor point are required in boom lifts. EWPs must have current annual inspections, and 10-year major inspections for booms.

What drives the cost
The hire rate is only part of the total. On short hires these items often add 20–50% to the bill—ask every supplier to quote them the same way:
- Delivery and collection—often priced per trip by truck size
- Weekly and monthly rates are much cheaper per day than daily hire
- Diesel versus battery (charging access on site)
- Damage waiver and tyre damage on rough sites
- Operator supply for truck-mounted and large booms
