Quick answer

Compaction equipment turns placed material into a layer that will carry load. The right machine depends on the material (granular, cohesive clay, asphalt), the layer thickness, the area and the density the specification or engineer requires.

Small work uses vibrating plates, reversible plates and jumping-jack rammers. Trenches suit rammers and remote-controlled trench rollers. Pads, subgrade and pavements use ride-on smooth drum or padfoot rollers, while multi-tyre rollers finish asphalt and sealed surfaces.

Compaction is usually tested, so moisture control matters as much as the machine. Many compaction jobs also need a water cart or at least a reliable water source on site.

Compaction classes and sizes

The table below lists the classes of compaction equipment most commonly available for hire in Australia. Exact specifications vary by make and model—confirm dimensions, weight and capacity with the supplier before booking.

Roller & compactor hire classes
ClassSize / specTypical jobs
Forward plate compactor60–100 kgPavers, paths, thin granular layers
Reversible plate150–500 kgDeeper granular layers, footings, retaining wall backfill
Rammer (jumping jack)60–80 kgCohesive soils and narrow trench backfill
Trench roller~1.5 t · remote controlService trenches and confined backfill with operator standing clear
Smooth drum roller3–20 tGranular fill, road base, asphalt breakdown
Padfoot roller10–20 tClay and cohesive fill, dam walls, embankments
Multi-tyre roller10–25 tSeal and asphalt finishing, kneading granular surfaces

How to choose the right machine

Start with material and lift depth

Clay needs kneading (padfoot, rammer); sand and crushed rock respond to vibration (plate, smooth drum). Tell the supplier your loose layer thickness.

Ask what density is specified

If a geotechnical engineer or council requires a percentage of maximum dry density, choose a machine and number of passes that can reach it and allow for testing.

Plan water

Material that is too dry or too wet will not compact properly. Confirm the water source, a water cart or a hose supply before rollers arrive.

Watch vibration near structures

Heavy vibratory rollers can damage adjoining buildings, services and retaining walls. Consider static mode or a smaller machine near sensitive structures.

Licences, tickets and compliance

  • No High Risk Work Licence applies to rollers or plates, but ride-on rollers on civil sites typically require a competency (RII roller unit or VOC).
  • Hand-arm vibration and noise exposure must be managed for plate and rammer operators—rotate tasks and supply hearing protection.
  • Rollers operating near edges and batters need rollover protective structures and seatbelts in use.

See our plant licences and tickets guide for the full list of High Risk Work Licence classes.

What drives the cost

The hire rate is only part of the total. On short hires these items often add 20–50% to the bill—ask every supplier to quote them the same way:

  • Transport—ride-on rollers normally travel on a tilt tray or float
  • Operator hours and minimum call-out for wet hire
  • Water cart hire and water sourcing
  • Compaction testing (usually separate, by a NATA-accredited lab)
  • Pad-foot shells or scraper bars for sticky clay

For indicative 2026 rates, see the plant hire cost guide.

FAQ

Roller & compactor hire FAQ

Plate compactor or rammer?

Use a plate on granular material like sand, road base and crushed rock. Use a rammer on clay and cohesive soil or in narrow trenches where a plate cannot fit.

What roller should I hire for a driveway base?

A 1–3 tonne smooth drum roller or a heavy reversible plate is typical for residential road base. Commercial pavements use 10 tonne plus rollers.

How thick can I compact in one layer?

It depends on the machine. Light plates may only compact 100–150 mm effectively; large vibratory rollers can compact 300 mm or more. Follow the specification and test results.

Do I need a water cart?

For large pads and road work, usually yes. Moisture needs to be close to optimum for the material to reach target density.
